Private equity firms compete to take Trend Micro private

Several private equity firms, including Bain Capital, Advent International, EQT AB, and KKR, are exploring a potential buyout of Japanese cybersecurity company Trend Micro, which currently holds a market value of ¥1.32trn ($8.54bn), according to sources cited by Reuters.

The potential acquisition would mark one of the largest leveraged buyouts in recent months. However, a deal is not guaranteed, as Trend Micro may ultimately decide to remain independent. The company began considering a sale in 2024 after receiving acquisition interest.

Founded in 1988 by Steve Chang, Jenny Chang, and Eva Chen, Trend Micro initially focused on antivirus software before expanding into cloud computing, network security, and endpoint protection. The company’s major partners include AWS, Google, Capgemini, Microsoft, and IBM. Its security solutions cater to both home users and enterprise clients, covering areas such as network and web security, mobile device protection, and anti-spam services.

In June 2024, Trend Micro integrated NVIDIA technology to enhance AI-powered cybersecurity tools, strengthening its data center security offerings.

The cybersecurity sector has seen increased private equity interest. In 2024, Reuters reported that Advent, Bain, and EQT were also considering acquiring cybersecurity firm Rapid7. Trend Micro, advised by Goldman Sachs, remains in early-stage discussions with potential buyers.
