Ares Management has appointed Gabriel Fong as a partner for Asia credit, reinforcing its push into special situations investing across the region, according to a Bloomberg report.

Fong joins from CapitaLand Investment and will oversee North Asia, including China, Hong Kong, and South Korea. He will report directly to Edwin Wong, head of Asia credit, while another partner will continue to manage Australia, India, and Southeast Asia.

The hire comes as Ares expands its Asia Pacific credit business and raises a new special situations fund. The firm secured $2.4bn for its previous Asia special situations strategy in 2023 and is targeting at least that amount for the successor vehicle.

Ares manages about $596bn in assets globally and has steadily built its Asian credit presence through acquisitions and platform expansion over the past five years.

The appointment signals continued private equity interest in Asia credit opportunities, as market dislocation and refinancing pressures create scope for special situations strategies.
