Behind the seams: Hermès family steps up dealmaking with new Breithorn offshoot

Krefeld, the family office representing more than 100 heirs to the Hermès fortune, has established a new investment arm called Breithorn Holding as the billionaire dynasty prepares to accelerate activity beyond its luxury flagship, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.

Breithorn will oversee fund and asset management and is led by Charles-Henri Chaliac, who also serves as Krefeld’s chief executive. The move marks the most visible step yet in the family office’s evolution since its creation in 2022, when descendants consolidated their separate investment vehicles in response to LVMH’s attempted takeover more than a decade earlier.

The Hermès family controls roughly 67% of the listed company, and its more than 100 heirs hold a combined net worth of $186bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Dividend income of €5.1bn over the past four years has given Krefeld significant capital to deploy.

Krefeld has disclosed few investments to date. One early deal involved French insurer Albingia, while the office also acquired a minority stake in Anjac Health & Beauty alongside KKR, as reported in Les Echos. The creation of Breithorn suggests a broader investment mandate as the family seeks opportunities outside Hermès International.

Both Krefeld and Breithorn are based at the same Paris address. Krefeld recently raised its authorised capital to €1bn, and its statutes restrict share ownership to descendants of Emile-Maurice Hermès. The board includes members of the Bauer, de Seynes, Guerrand, and Mommeja branches of the family.

Chaliac joined the family office from Belgian private equity firm Cobepa, while recent hires also include Claire Zeng from Morgan Stanley. The developments position Krefeld alongside family offices of other major French fortunes, including Tethys, Mousse Partners, and Agache.

The expansion underscores rising private capital ambitions among Europe’s wealthiest families, many of whom are increasingly active in private equity, minority investments, and long-term asset ownership.
