Danone expands portfolio with celebrity-backed Huel takeover

Danone has agreed to acquire UK-based nutrition brand Huel, as the company strengthens its position in the rapidly growing health and protein segment.

The transaction, for which financial terms were not disclosed, remains subject to regulatory approval.

Huel produces fortified protein powders, ready-to-drink products, and meal solutions, and generated approximately $285m in revenue in 2024.

The company has attracted high-profile investors, including Steven Bartlett and Idris Elba, and was valued at around $560m in a 2022 funding round.

The acquisition supports Danone’s strategy to expand its portfolio of high-protein and health-focused products, a category that has benefited from increasing consumer demand and broader wellness trends.

Danone has already seen strong performance from its protein-focused brands, including YoPRO, and has been actively building its nutrition platform through acquisitions, including Kate Farms.

Huel’s direct-to-consumer model, combined with growing retail distribution, positions it as a scalable platform within the global nutrition market.

The deal highlights continued consolidation in the consumer health and nutrition sector, as strategic buyers seek to acquire high-growth brands aligned with evolving consumer preferences.
