Emona Capital backs Secret Mode in indie gaming push with strategic acquisition

Emona Capital acquired video game publisher Secret Mode, marking its first move into game publishing.

The buyout, in partnership with Secret Mode’s Ed Blincoe and James Schall, allows the company to operate independently after separating from Sumo Group.

Founded in 2020, Secret Mode has built a diverse portfolio with titles such as Still Wakes the Deep, A Little to the Left, Wobbledogs, and Eternal Threads. With Sumo Group refocusing on development services, the deal enables Secret Mode to strengthen its support for indie PC and console games.

James Schall emphasized the significance of independence, stating, “We can now fully dedicate ourselves to uncovering indie gems and bringing underappreciated masterpieces to a wider audience.” The company plans to expand partnerships with independent developers worldwide.

Emona Capital, already invested in PC and console studios like Relic Entertainment and Amber Studio, sees the acquisition as a strategic step in gaming. Managing Partner Dominik Dolenec reinforced the firm’s commitment to the independent gaming sector, while Partner Michael Moriarty highlighted how the investment complements Emona’s existing portfolio.

Secret Mode will continue operating from Leamington Spa, with plans for growth and new publishing initiatives in the coming months.
