The coronavirus pandemic has hampered private capital transactions in e-commerce in the Asia-Pacific region, according to a report by data provider Preqin. Only $7bn were invested across 388 private capital e-commerce transactions in the region during 1H of 2020, compared with $10bn across 538 deals in 1H of 2019, it says.

Overall, private equity and venture capital funds focused in the region ended 2019 with a record $1.29tn in assets under management, up 34% from 2018. The e-commerce sector recorded $128bn worth of private capital transactions in Asia-Pacific between 2015 and 2019, including a nine-year high of $35bn in 2018, the report adds.
