Partners Group invests $3.2bn in private equity secondaries amid market dislocation

Partners Group more than doubled its investment in private equity secondaries in 2024, committing $3.2bn—up from $1.5bn in 2023.

The firm capitalized on market dislocation to secure high-value opportunities across the asset class.

The Private Equity Partnership Investments team completed 25 secondary transactions, covering 80 general partners, 150 funds, and 3,000 portfolio companies. Over 80% of the capital went into LP-portfolios, as limited partners sought liquidity following two years of weak exit activity. Among the firm’s largest transactions was an €800m NAV private equity secondaries portfolio acquired from one of the UK’s largest private pension schemes. The deal included 12 fund interests and more than 250 high-quality companies.

Partners Group follows a thematic investment strategy, using insights from its private equity business to target sectors with strong tailwinds. Every opportunity undergoes a rigorous company-by-company analysis to ensure long-term growth potential. In 2024, the firm reviewed $125bn in secondary transactions but selected only 3%, underscoring its disciplined approach.

The firm has consistently delivered top-quartile net multiples across its closed-ended private equity secondaries funds since 2008. Demand for the strategy remains strong, with Partners Group raising over $5bn since closing its previous fund. Its integrated platform enables capital raising through mandates and bespoke investment structures alongside traditional funds.

Co-Head of Private Equity Partnership Investments, Anthony Shontz, expects the secondaries market to remain strong, as LPs seek liquidity and private equity firms extend their holding periods for quality assets. Managing Director Nicolas Petitjean highlighted the growing importance of identifying portfolios with strong growth potential, emphasizing the firm’s industry network and underwriting expertise as key differentiators in an increasingly selective market.

Since 1998, Partners Group has been a leading player in private equity secondaries, investing $35bn across more than 400 transactions. Its Private Equity Partnership Investments team, now with over 70 professionals across Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific, continues to reinforce the firm’s market leadership.
